Job Opportunities & Trends for Cloud Computing

 July 20  | 0 Comments

Cloud Computing, often referred as ‘the Cloud’  delivers on-demand computing resources which may be either applications or data centers as a service over the internet on a pay for use basis.
Cloud Computing is therefore a type of computing that relies on sharing a pool of physical and/or virtual resources, rather than deploying local or personal hardware and software.

Cloud Computing provides three major types of services:

  1. Software as a service (SaaS)

Cloud-based application or software as a service (Saas) runs on distant computers that are owned and operated by Cloud service providers. Users can use this service on pay-per-use basis via the internet, usually a web browser.

  1. Platform as a service (PaaS)

Platform as a service provides a Cloud-based environment with everything required to support the complete lifecycle of building and delivering web-based (Cloud) applications, without the cost and complexity of buying and managing the underlying hardware, software, provisioning and hosting.

  1. Infrastructure as a service (IaaS)

Infrastructure as a service provides companies with computing resources including servers, networking, storage and data center space on a pay-per-use basis.

Future of Cloud Computing

Cloud Computing has begun to play a key role when it comes to the level of access and control in any organization. It has gained the ability to completely change any IT model with significant leaps in agility and flexibility. Because of this, skilled Cloud professionals are in high demand now than ever. The demand for a particular skill can be judged from its success and popularity of that technology. So let’s look at some of the forecasts and survey results to determine how well Cloud Computing will be doing in the future.

  • According to the US Department of Labor, Cloud Computing has the highest growth, making it a promising field. And, as per Gartner’s Report, “The use of Cloud Computing is growing, and by 2016 this growth will increase to become the bulk of new IT spend… and nearly half of large enterprises will have hybrid Cloud deployments by the end of 2017.”
  • A study by Goldman Sachs projects that the spending on Cloud Computing infrastructure and platforms will grow at a 30% CAGR from 2013 through 2018.

  • Goldman Sachs estimates that Amazon has taken in $4B in revenue, or 26% of the IaaS and PaaS markets, in the past 12 months.
  • According to a study by Goldman Sachs, Cloud computing is one of the top three initiatives planned by IT Executives to make Cloud an integral part of their organizations.

  • IDC predicts that by 2016, there will be an 11% shift of IT budget, from the traditional in-house IT delivery to various versions of Cloud Computing as a new delivery model.
  • By 2017, 35% of new applications will be Cloud-enabled, continuous delivery and enabled by faster DevOps life cycles to streamline rollout of new features and business innovations.
  • IDC forecasts that by 2018, public Cloud spending will be more than double of $127.5 billion.
  • By 2016, over 80% of enterprises in the world will be using IaaS.
  • By 2018, more than 60% of enterprises will have at least half of their infrastructure on Cloud-based platforms.
  • According to Forrester Research, the global Cloud Computing market will grow from a $40.7 billion in 2011 to $241 billion in 2020.

Career Opportunities & Job trends

According to David Girard, a participant in IT Salary and Careers Survey, “Cloud is making a huge difference to IT careers.”

Cloud Computing has experienced exponential growth over the last few years and is only expected to increase over the next few years. The below graph shows the job trend of Cloud Computing skills. Even though there was a lull in the job trend, Cloud computing skill has picked up the pace and is progressing well.

The trends from Google for ‘Cloud Computing’ as an industry shows good progress as well.

With an increase in the adaptation of Cloud Computing comes the demand for this skill. According to a report by Search Cloud Computing, there is a huge surge in the hiring rates for IT professionals with Cloud skills.

With more companies worldwide adopting and harnessing the power of the Cloud, the demand for experts in this field has risen drastically. While opportunities are growing exponentially, it is necessary to have the right skills to land a good job. Cloud Computing has countless career opportunities that include Cloud engineers, Cloud architects, Cloud developers, Cloud security specialists, Cloud support analysts and many more.

Even though some IT professionals feel threatened by the rise of Cloud, many see the technology as an opportunity to accelerate their careers. It becomes necessary to understand what skills sets are valued more and then attempt to navigate their Cloud careers by taking specific paths to reach it. So, refining your skills in Cloud is crucial to land that next hot job and enjoy a long and rewarding career.

There are two types of emerging cloud computing careers: IT pros with specific Cloud skills and IT administrators with Cloud architecture know-how.

Organizations are looking for specific Cloud Computing skills such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform. So gaining expertise and knowledge in these platforms will be beneficial to your career.

Demand for Cloud Computing Skills

Cloud technology is crucial to organizations for building out or replacing their data center architecture.
